**DISCLAIMER - I DO NOT SUPPORT ANY TERRORIST GROUP NOR DO I SUPPORT TERRORISM IN ANY WAY**
So this post is all about Terrorism. To clarify, in case you misread the title of this post, I am infact someone who is too self righteous for their own bloody good. Well according to some of my family from the Cayman Islands anyway.
So I'll start by giving a bit of background on this one.
As far as I am concerned, I'm not in support of terrorism, I think it's awful and sad, and certainly not something to joke about.
Recently a young member of my family made a joke, or rather posted a joke on facebook that she heard elsewhere. It goes as follows "o0hh, jingle bombs, jingle bombs mines blew up you see.. where are all the virgins that binladin promised mee? lmfao"
To me, this just isn't funny, it's bad taste and offensive. Terrorism is not a joke, however in voicing my own opinion (which I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to do, what with living in a country where freedom of speech is allowed) my family, in particular this young girls parents, have said i'm too self righteous for my own bloody good.
I am however wondering if they know the meaning of "self righteous" considering their poor spelling and grammar, but whatever. I know that I'm not self righteous.
Just because I think that Terrorism isn't a joking matter, doesn't mean that I'm smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others. I appreciate and welcome the opinions of others, I may not agree on some of them but I appreciate that each person has the right to his or her own opinions. I just think that there are some things that shouldn't be made fun of. Terrorism is one of them. I could list a few more things, but I won't.
Personally, I'm not the type of person who is very jokey, I don't tell racist jokes, I don't take the piss out of the dead, I don't make jokes about child abuse or child abusers, but I know people who do. Many of these jokes are in very bad taste, and perhaps it's because I live in a very PC world now (although I'm not always PC, and sometimes make faux paux's) but in the UK, making un-PC jokes could land you in a lot of hot water.
Perhaps this is where my family in Cayman are different.
Grand Cayman is a very pretty country, the beaches are gorgeous, the waters are crystal clear, the food is amazing, the locals are friendly to tourists, but it's very different culturally to the UK.
When my cousin moved over to the UK, we we're driving down the road, there were 4 of us in the car, and my cousin freely used the "N" word. We were shocked, and the driver almost had an accident, not to mention one of the passengers was a policeman! You just don't use that word in the UK, it's offensive. However in Cayman, it's used by pretty much all the younger generations, quite a lot of the time. Nobody bats an eyelid.
So is it down to culture? Is it only me that thinks terrorism isn't a joking matter because my country is over the top PC? Because I'm keen to know. Do you live in a PC country? Do you think it's acceptable to make fun and jokes about terrorism and terrorists? Please do let me know, cause I fail to see why a family in the Cayman Islands thinks it is and why they say that I'm too self righteous for my own bloody good, because I think it's not.
Is it at all funny that on the 11th of September, terrorists attacked the World Trade Centre in NYC, killing over 2000 people?
Does this picture make you laugh?
Well it shouldn't.
and if it does, then you should be ashamed of yourself.
And if my opinion on this matter makes me "too self righteous for my own bloody good" then so be it. It's a hell of a lot better than being a person who thinks that terrorists killing innocent people are in any way amusing.
So I say good luck to my "family" in the Caymans, please, feel free to make as many jokes about terrorism as you please, but I won't be associated with you.
And I hope you think about your joke every September the 11th during the 2 minute silence to mark the lives of those lost in the attack on the world trade centre. and I hope you feel ashamed for it.
This post is dedicated to those innocent people who lost their lives on the 11th of September 2001 due to the terrorist attack on the USA. May you rest in peace.
